Theodore Roosevelt (1858 – 1919) was an American statesman, author, explorer, soldier, naturalist, and reformer who served as the 26th President of the United States from 1901 to 1909.

A book by President Roosevelt needs no recommendation from our pen. Every one who has read "The Strenuous Life" will eagerly turn to anything that comes from the same pen. Whatever Mr. Roosevelt does he does with all his might; therefore, we find him chasing the wolf, the bear, the cougar, or the bobcat with untiring zeal.

"Outdoor Pastimes of an American Hunter,” by Theodore Roosevelt, is one of the very few instances of a book written by a President of the United States and published during his term in office. Mr. Roosevelt‘s literary method in treating of outdoor subjects is well known.

We all know the President of the United States as a many-sided man, admirable on all his sides; we all know him as the mighty hunter whose hardihood and prowess in the wilderness explain to soirte extent the statesman and ruler. But in this most delightful volume he reveals himself to us so thoroughly that it has an interest not only for the sportsman, but for the general reader, far above the interest naturally attached to a volume of sporting reminiscences by an American President.

Wide knowledge, intense, almost boyish, enthusiasm, modesty, and admiration for the companions of his hunting trips—all these we expect to find. But here real wit of thought and phrase is the handmaid of shrewdness and experience, while a genuine "literary touch" makes reading easy as well as profitable. Mr. Roosevelt's criticism is trenchant, his exposition is lucid; in fine, he writes well, and of course he has a vastly interesting story to tell. . . . More than a passing mention is due to the photographs which are quite excellent, from those which show us the bobcat "treed" in a pine, and looking for all the world like a very handsome, very angry, and rather pathetic Persian cat, to those which illustrate the amazing domesticity of the once fierce grizzlies in Yellowstone Park. It is a volume full of enjoyment in every way.

On the whole this is a hearty, healthy, inspiring book, which does much to explain the breezy personality of one of the most prominent rulers of our time, and it is written with a frank simplicity, for which, from less favored heads of states, we should only look in vain. There is a dash of dry humor here and there, but never a sign of effeminate pathos; and throughout there is the love of nature and of life which is only found in clean men who are both strong and honest. He is a man with good red blood in his veins, truth and courage in his heart, and rare good sense in his head. He eats well, sleeps well, works well, and enjoys the thrill and throb of a healthy life like a boy of twenty.

President Roosevelt, the head of a democratic nation, is a democratic sportsman. He is not driven to the scene of battle in a motor, he does not expect a man to load his gun, he does not sit down to an elaborate lunch with ladies, and in short, he is not a featherbed sportsman.

Outdoor Pastimes of an American Hunter Theodore Roosevelt Reviews

Read other source books describing this as a great resource for learning about animal behavior. It was just an account and scorecard of the animals slaughtered on the President's hunting trips.
Came in short time period and was in exactly the shape as reported beforehand. Price was very goo, too.
great
Very interesting stories of his hunts
A good book I have enjoyed the diffrent hunting accounts as recorded by Theodore Roosevelt. It is evident that hunting was a passion of his, especially the details and circumstances expressed in his various trips.
Wow. What a great book by our President Teddy Roosevelt. No wonder he is on Mount Rushmore. He tells of a time long past and I don't even think he knew what a gift he was creating for those of us who can now read his writings. I'm not a hunter but he tells it like it was.
Teddy Roosevelt may have had physical and visual limitations but his wildlife experiences leave no doubt he spent his best days afield hunting, observing wildlife and just enjoying the great expanse we call North Dakota. How could I not be envious?
